Publix Super Markets Charities Donates $1.5 Million to Feeding America food bank network; Harry Chapin Food Bank to receive a trailer-load of food and a $120,000 check for a new truck

LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2015) Publix Super Markets Charities (PSMC) announced today that it will donate $1.5 million to Feeding America®, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, and 12 member food banks across Publix’s operating area, including Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.

Food banks are in need of refrigerated trucks to transport perishable items that are donated by food retailers. This generous donation continues the Foundation’s commitment to meeting the basic needs of the communities it serves.

The need

According to the USDA, more than 48 million Americans have limited or uncertain access to adequate food, including 15 million children. This means hunger is a reality for one in seven people living in the United States.

 “The statistics are staggering,” said Carol Jenkins Barnett, president of Publix Super Markets Charities. “Hunger affects all walks of life in communities across the country. We continue to hear about the need for fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy from Feeding America member food banks. Our Foundation’s $1.5 million donation will help the food banks collect, safely transport and distribute even more wholesome, perishable foods to our local communities.”  

Publix recovers, donates perishable food

In 2007, Publix piloted an in-store perishable recovery program to benefit the Feeding America network of food banks. Store departments including deli, meat, produce and dairy, gather perishable, wholesome foods that are safe for consumption, but unsalable, to donate to food bank members. To date, Publix has donated more than 174 million pounds of perishable food to food banks, representing almost 145 million meals.    

Feeding America also will receive a $60,000 contribution to be used toward its mission of feeding the hungry. The Publix foundation’s contribution means an additional 660,000 meals to individuals and families in need.  In addition, the trailer-loads of food donated to the 12 food banks totals more than $660,000.

About Harry Chapin Food Bank

The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and distributes quality food to families in need through a network of more than 150 nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, providing food to about 30,000 people each month.

The food bank can distribute $6 worth of food and grocery items for each donated dollar. Last fiscal year, the food bank distributed 18.4 million pounds of food and other grocery items to its partner agencies, valued at $31.3 million. This was the equivalent of 15.3 million meals.
