The Blossoms for Birds event formally kicked off our Thanksgiving bird drive Monday and continues every day from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday. Just bring a frozen or fresh turkey or chicken to Fort Myers Floral Designs and get a bright bouquet of flowers in exchange. Some early birds were arriving Monday at the floral shop, 11480 S. Cleveland Ave. (traffic light at Beacon Manor and U.S. 41). But the bar has been set high. We need 10,000 birds to provide to families who otherwise would not be able to share a Thanksgiving dinner.
John Trierweiler of WINK-TV was on hand to bring the fowl message to Southwest Florida residents, gamely cradling a frozen turkey during his broadcasts. Greg DePasquale, owner of Fort Myers Floral Design, manned the front counter as well as the shop’s drive-through. If you can’t donate a bird, cash donations are also welcome; $14 will buy a bird to help feather our freezers as Thanksgiving gets closer. For more information, call the shop at 239-278-0770 or visit fortmyersfloraldesigns.com. Otherwise, you can bring birds through Nov. 20 to the Fort Myers warehouse, 3760 Fowler St. (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.); or the Naples Warehouse, 2221 Corporation Blvd. (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
