Our Thanksgiving turkey drive ended Friday with a total of about 1,400 birds donated by the public. Thanks to all who brought in their last-minute fowl so those in need can have a Happy Thanksgiving to share with their families. We had 911 turkeys as of Thursday night, so about 500 more came in on Friday!
We thank the public for their generosity. People stopped by our office carrying one turkey or two turkeys, and there was the couple who unloaded 10 turkeys from the trunk of their car. Every one counted.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank also thanks WINK-TV for being the impetus for the influx in turkeys this week. When WINK aired a story late last week that we had received only about 75 turkeys so far, the public and businesses stepped up to the plate. Billy Fuccillo of Fuccillo Kia in Cape Coral immediately came forward with a $5,000 gift to buy turkeys. Others made monetary donations, including a $2,800 gift from a Naples podiatrist. Another Naples donor gave $5,000. Other media picked up the story and ran with it.
With those monetary gifts, we were able to buy $10,000 worth of turkeys, or about 670 turkeys (at about $15 each wholesale). So adding the 1,400 turkeys donated by the public to our purchase of 670 means we have more than 2,000 turkeys. The USDA has also provided 7,000 whole chickens to distribute for Thanksgiving.
If you missed the Friday deadline, you can still donate turkeys! They will be stored and then distributed for the Christmas holiday.
