Turkey Drive Alert!

Tags: Donate, Thanksgiving 2015

We’re up to 911 donated by the public as of the end of the day Thursday. Today is the last day of the drive. We invite people to bring in their last-minute fowl so those in need can have a Happy Thanksgiving to share with their families.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank thanks WINK-TV for being the impetus for the influx in turkeys this week. When WINK aired a story late last week that we had received only about 75 turkeys so far, the public and businesses stepped up to the plate. Bill Fuccillo of Fuccillo Kia in Cape Coral immediately came forward with a $5,000 gift to buy turkeys. Others made monetary donations, including a $2,800 gift from a Naples podiatrist. Other media picked up the story and ran with it.

With those monetary gifts, we were able to buy $10,000 worth of turkeys, or about 670 turkeys. So adding the 911 donated by the public to our purchase of 670, that means we have about 1,500 turkeys.

We also thank the public for their generosity. People stopped by our office carrying one turkey or two turkeys, and there was the couple who unloaded 10 turkeys from the trunk of their car. Every one counted.

And there were donations from businesses like John R. Wood Island Real Estate, Inc., which brought in 71 turkeys. Jay Richter, Managing Broker of John R. Wood Island Real Estate, Inc. and Tommy Wiley, Realtor, brought the birds in Wiley’s pickup truck. They heard the news of the shortage and about 40 of their agents contributed to buy the turkeys, which weighed a total of 989 pounds.

Keep them coming! There’s still time to donate.

You can drop the turkeys off at the food bank’s Fort Myers or Naples warehouses.
