WEEKEND OF ONE TO
BE HELD MARCH 23-25
The Harry Chapin Food Bank organizes “Weekend of One” to raise awareness and mobilize action against hunger. Faith partners team up with the Harry Chapin Food Bank to help spread the word and raise funding to support the purchase and distribution of food. For every $1 donated allows us to distribute $6 worth of food. Faith partners will talk about hunger and encourage each person to donate at least $1.00.
This year’s Weekend of One will be held March 23-25. Faith-based organizations are asked to contact Bedzaida Bryen at the Harry Chapin Food Bank at 239-334-7007, ext. 141, for additional information and a commitment to participate. Last year 16 faith-based groups participated by informing their congregations about the food bank and asking their congregations to donate $1 each.. Since not all faiths meet on the same weekend day, it is “Weekend of One.” Last year over $6,000 was collected, which translated into $36,000 worth of food that could be purchased
The following faith-based churches, houses of worship, synagogues, temples and organizations participated last year: All Faiths Unitarians, Cape Coral First United Methodist, Temple Shalom-Naples, Temple Beth El, Word of Life, First Baptist Church, Peace Lutheran Church, United Universalist, Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church, Faith Presbyterian Church, Unity Church of Peace, Unitarian Universalist, Fellowship of Charlotte County, Blanchard House Museum, Temple Beth-El Punta Gorda, and St. Marks Missionary Baptist Church.
Today in the United States, over 50 million people are going hungry. Places of worship and local charities are often the first places families turn to when they require food assistance. Around SWFL, faith partners work in local communities to provide food to neighbors in need. Together, we work to advocate for hungry families and urge our nation’s leaders to strengthen anti-hunger programs.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of more than 150 local nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, who provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly. Over 1 million pounds of food are distributed monthly. For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community. In the past fiscal year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed 12.5 million pounds of food and other grocery products; this was a 31% increase over the previous year.
